Saving Lives In Custody California (SLIC-CA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, created to empower families who have lost loved ones in custody to seek justice and advocate for systemic change. We guide families to legal resources, support community rallies, and collaborate with authorities to ensure thorough investigations and prevent future tragedies.

Saving Lives in Custody California (SLIC-CA) was founded following the Saving Lives in Custody Campaign ™ (SLIC Campaign), in response to the tragic death of Elisa Serna, a 24-year-old who died in San Diego's Las Colinas Detention Facility in 2019 while being held on a minor charge. SLIC-CA highlights the deaths of Paul Silva, Ruben Nunez, Kevin Mills, Saxon Rodriguez, Omar Arroyo Moreno, Gilbert Gil, Matthew Settle, Raymond Vogelman, Vianna Granillo, and others, exposing a disturbing trend of in-custody deaths in San Diego County jails.
Driven by these tragedies, SLIC-CA was formed to advocate for systemic change and ensure accountability for such deaths.

- Sundee Weddle: Saxon Rodriguez's mother. Saxon died of a drug overdose in custody in 2021, suggesting

- Sundee Weddle: Saxon Rodriguez's mother. Saxon died of a drug overdose in custody in 2021, suggesting smuggled drugs within the facility. Sundee demands the San Diego Sheriff implement employee scanning to prevent such occurrences.
- David Settles: Matthew Settles's brother. Matthew Settles, a man with severe mental illness, died in the George Bailey Detention Facility in San Diego. His family is seeking justice to prevent similar tragedies, highlighting ongoing issues with mental health care in jails.
- Paloma Serna: Elisa Serna's mother. Elisa died due to alcohol/drugs withdraws in 2019. In custody, her medical needs were ignored. Paloma now encourages and helps other families who have faced similar tragedies.
